Former Portuguese international midfielder Manuel Fernandes completed the move to the Persian Gulf Pro League club Sepahan as a free agent.

Fernandes joined up with the team in a training camp in Turkey and underwent medicals before signing a one-year contract on Saturday.

The 36-year-old midfielder started last season with Turkish side Kayserispor before joining Greek Super League club Apollon Smyrnis in February, though he only managed four appearances for the team.

A product of Benfica’s youth system, Fernandes signed for Valencia in 2007, playing in 56 matches for the La Liga outfit, while spending loan spells at Everton and Besiktas.

He moved to the Russian Premier League’s Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014, winning the 2017/18 title.

He also lifted the Russian Cup trophy on three occasions with Lokomotiv.

Representing the national team at all age levels, Fernandes made his senior debut in 2005 and was capped 15 times, scoring three.

He was part of the Portuguese squad at the 2018 World Cup finals.

Fernandes is the eighth summer signing for the Isfahan-based club following Ramin Rezaeian, Mohammad Daneshgar, Milad Zakipour, Mohammad Alinejad, Alireza Sadeqi, Nima Mirzad, and Burundian winger Elvis Kamsoba.

Sepahan will see a new head coach on the bench for the start of the new season in Portuguese Jose Morais – a former assistant to Jose Mourinho in Chelsea, Inter, and Real Madrid, and two-time K League 1 champion with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

Club legend Moharam Navidkia stepped down from his role as the manager in June after two years in charge, leading Sepahan to runner-up and third-spot finishes in the Iranian top flight.

The four-time champion will be looking for a first league title since 2015 in the new season.
