A second successive victory at the IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Handball Championship secured a first-ever spot for Iran in the competition’s round of 16.

A day after a 47-31 rout of Uzbekistan for a flying start in Group B, the reigning Asian champion defeated Senegal 39-29 in Skopje’s Boris Trajkovski Sports Center on Sunday to seal a top-two finish in the group.

Chipping in 12 goals, MVP Fatemeh Merikhi was again the star of the show for the event’s debutantes, while Negin Rahmani scored nine.

Iranian keeper Elnaz Yarmohammad-Touski was also an integral part to her team’s triumph with 15 saves, enjoying a 44 percent efficiency.

Sira Kebe and Theresina Gomis topped the scoring chart for the African side with seven and six goals respectively.

North Macedonia beat Uzbekistan 39-30 later in the day to lead the group with a superior goal difference, before squaring off against Iran today – with the top spot up for grabs.

The top two of the each group will progress to the main round, where 16 teams will be divided into four groups, battling it out for a place in the last-eight knockouts.
