Neighboring countries of Iran are ready to participate in economic and industrial projects of South Khorasan Province, eastern Iran, which enjoys great capacities for a big leap in production and processing of agricultural and mineral products, said the provincial governor general.

Javad Qena’at noted that during the meetings held with some ambassadors of neighboring countries and Central Asian states to boost cooperation and economic ties, favorable results achieved in many areas which will lead to joint investments.

Pointing out that most of exports by the eastern province are destined to Afghanistan, he said agricultural products have the lion’s share in exports to the country.

“Of course, we have not ignored the exports to other countries, and we follow shipments to other countries including Persian Gulf littoral states, and even further countries,” the official added.

Qena’at added, “One of weaknesses in the field of exporting agricultural products is the raw sale of goods, which deprives us of the necessary added value.

In fact, he said, the province should strengthen the capabilities in terms of conversion industries as well as product packaging and processing, so more focus is needed on the mentioned areas and by holding meetings with many foreign companies, more investments were made in the province.

Qena’at noted that measures have already started on the creation of processing and conversion industries in the agricultural sector, as South Khorasan is the main producer of some agricultural products in the country, such as jujube, saffron and barberry.

The governor general pointed out that one of the issues addressed by the 13th administration is the development of the production, especially technology-based manufacturing, and South Khorasan has taken considerable steps in this regard.

He stated that what is very important for the province at the moment is to increase production and processing capacity in the mining sector, as it hosts large copper, gold, nickel and aluminum mines.

The official pointed out, “Although South Khorasan is very rich in terms of mineral reserves, a very small part of the province's mines has been exploited.

“Of course, a limited amount of minerals extracted from the mines are often exported as raw materials without any processing.”

Referring to the necessity of developing processing, the governor general said, “Considering the importance of creating the added value for mineral products, the establishment of three processing complexes is now on the agenda.

South Khorasan Province borders Afghanistan in the east and Sistan and Baluchestan and Kerman provinces in the south.
