Iranian striker Ali Alipour only needed 11 minutes to get off the mark for Gil Vicente in the new season of Portugal’s Primeira Liga as he netted home side’s winner in a 1-0 victory over Pacos Ferreira.

Former Persepolis player, who left Maritimo in July to join Gil Vicente as a free agent, came off the bench to score with five minutes left on the clock at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos.

Alipour kept his cool to control the ball with his chest on a Fran Navarro’s cross before tapping in from inside the six-yard box.

The 26-year-old striker scored seven and made two assists in 36 outings across all competitions – including 17 in the starting XI – for Maritimo last term – his second season in the European football.

With just over three months until the World Cup finals get underway, Alipour, who has a couple of international caps under his belt, will be looking to convince head coach Dragan Skocic to pick him for the Iranian squad in the showdown in Qatar.

His goal on Monday rounded off a perfect opening day of the season for the Iranians in the Portuguese top flight.

Mehdi Taremi picked up where he left off for Porto last season by bagging a brace on Sunday as the champion kicked off its title defense with a 5-1 victory over Maritimo at home.
