An Iranian animation, ‘The Sprayer,’ written and directed by Farnoosh Abedi, received the Best Short Animation Award of the Diritti a Baschi, Human Rights Film Festival, in Italy.

The festival was held in the Italian city of Baschi (Terni), after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

To win the award, the Iranian film had to compete with 23 other animations, IRNA wrote.

‘The Sprayer’ tells the story of a land in which growing any kind of flower or plant is forbidden, and an army called “the sprayer” has the duty of hunting down and retaining the plants and their keepers. The life course of a soldier changes after knowing a small plant.

The 10-minute animation is made with 3D technique for children aged 7 and up.

The Iranian animation has already received the Best Short Film Award of the IndieX Film Fest in the U.S.

Abedi’s animation has been screened at the WILDsound FEEDBACK Film and Screenplay Festival in Canada, the Prague International Film Awards in the Czech Republic, the Wasteland Film Festival in the U.S., the Viborg Animation Festival in Denmark, the Torino Underground Cinefest in Italy, and the Pigeon International Film Festival in Iceland.

The Italian festival aims to promote and disseminate auteur cinema with particular regard to human rights issues and to encourage dialogue between directors.
