Dutch striker Locadia joins Persepolis

Dutch striker Jürgen Locadia signed for Persian Gulf Pro League club Persepolis as a free agent on Friday.

The deal rounds off a busy transfer window for the Tehran-based Reds, who will kick off their league campaign against Zob Ahan in Isfahan today.

Having left Premier League side Brighton for Bochum midway through last season, the 28-year-old forward scored a couple of goals – against German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – in 11 Bundesliga outings, which included only four in the starting XI.

A former player of the Dutch club PSV and MLS outfit FC Cincinnati, Locadia netted 14 in 36 caps across different youth levels for the national team.

After a disappointing season for Persepolis’s frontline, which saw Mehdi Abdi, Hamed Pakdel, Issa Al-e Kassir, and Sherzod Temirov score a combined 17 goals, Locadia’s acquisition ends months of frustration for head coach Yahya Golmohammadi and club supporters, who had been crying out for a striker all summer.

The Reds, who saw their run of five successive league titles come to an end at the hands of archrival Esteghlal in May, made nine signings prior to Locadia’s deal, as they are expected to be involved in a three-horse race again – along with Esteghlal and Sepahan – to lift the trophy.

Iranian international keeper Alireza Beiranvand and center-back Morteza Pouraliganji, as well as ex-Sepahan trio Soroush Rafiei, Danial Esmaeilifard, and Giorgi Gvelesiani have joined Persepolis, while Saeed Sadeqi, who topped the assists chart in the Iranian top flight with 14 contributions last season, also left Golgohar Sirjan to become Reds’ marquee signing in the summer.

Former Zob Ahan midfielder Sina Asad-Beigi and Naft Masjed Soleyman fullback Mohammad-Mehdi Ahmadi will also start the new season in the Reds shirt.
