Strategic cooperation between Iran and Iraq is necessary as the two countries’ security is interconnected, said an Iranian general.

President of Iran’s Supreme National Defense University (SNDU) Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam made the remarks in a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Lieutenant General Saad Mazhar al-Alaq, in Tehran on Saturday, Mehr News Agency reported.

Brigadier General Ahmadi-Moqaddam added the presence of foreign powers and terrorist groups, such as Daesh, in the region caused numerous problems for Iraq, which could naturally impact Iran as well, saying, however, the crisis was overcome in light of the strategic cooperation between the two countries and their armed forces.

Lieutenant General Alaq, who is the president of the Iraqi Defense University for Higher Military Studies, described ties between the two nations as friendly and brotherly.

He added that earlier a memorandum of understanding was signed between the two universities, saying his trip to Iran is aimed at sharing experiences and expanding bilateral cooperation.

Lieutenant General Alaq noted that the two countries have also cooperated closely in the fight against Daesh terrorists.
