It took Iran 56 years to grab a medal in an international women’s volleyball meet, as it squeezed into the final of the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey, on Sunday.

Coached by Italy’s Alessandra Campedelli, Iranian players handed Azerbaijan a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 25-22) defeat in the semifinal.

Not to be outdone, Azerbaijan came back from one set down to secure parity, but Iran dashed the rival’s hopes of booking a spot in today’s final showdown, triggering jubilation among their sports-loving fellow countrymen after a decades-long wait.

Iran snatched a bronze medal in the women’s volleyball event of the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
