The Iranian government has put in a very successful and commendable performance in the area of foreign policy and regional diplomacy, said a lawmaker.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily, Mohammad Safaei listed some of the government’s foreign policy achievements over the past 12 months as reviving the country’s regional relations, expansion of cooperation with neighbors and diversifying foreign ties.

He stressed that, of course, the experience and capabilities of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian have also played a very significant role in the government’s successful performance.

The MP added that in the economic sector also, the country has had a good situation in the field of industry ever since the beginning of Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi’s term in office, adding that Iran’s exports of industrial products have witnessed a remarkable growth.

He stressed that Iran is currently among the world’s major exporters of steel and petrochemicals, noting that a large number of the country’s industrial products have managed to gain entry into global markets.

Safaei added that, at present, the steel and petrochemical sectors account for 42 percent of Iran’s industrial exports, with the remaining part pertaining to the overseas sales of home appliances, electronic devices, electricity, cellulose products, modern and advanced industries and medicine, which are destined for regional states.

He emphasized that Iran has also a lot to say in terms of exporting techno-engineering services and can take part in many industrial projects of regional countries.

Safaei said the ground has been prepared for Iran’s exports in other areas, such as summer crops, to Russia and neighboring states.

However, he argued that the government’s performance could have been better in some fields, such as those pertaining to food security and people’s livelihood.

The lawmaker said that owing to the country’s huge oil and gas resources, former Iranian administrations were always reliant on oil revenues, which slowed economic growth and stimulation of the domestic production sector.

This comes as the present government has favorably reduced the country’s dependence on oil revenues, he added.
