The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned a fatal bomb attack targeting a convoy of vehicles carrying supplies in Burkina Faso’s restive northern region.

In a statement, Nasser Kanaani condemned the attack by terrorist groups on the convoy of humanitarian supplies in Burkina Faso that has killed and wounded dozens of civilians, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He also expressed sympathy with the government and people of Burkina Faso and the families of the victims of the terrorist blast.

At least 35 civilians were killed as a convoy of vehicles carrying supplies in Burkina Faso’s northern region struck an improvised explosive device (IED) on Monday.

The explosion, which wounded 37 others, occurred as the military-escorted convoy traveled along the road from Bourzanga to Djibo.

The border area has been central to a spiraling security crisis in the wider region over the last 10 years, and has seen increasing attacks by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Daesh terrorist groups following military takeovers in Mali and Burkina Faso in May 2021 and January 2022, respectively.

In early August, at least 15 soldiers were killed in the area by a double IED blast. In June, at least 86 civilians were killed by armed attackers in the northern town of Seytenga.
