Carlos Queiroz said he was delighted to be back in Iran to retake the helm at the country’s national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Surrounded by the reporters and fans in Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, the Portuguese tactician said: “I feel [like being back at] home, and that’s the best feeling that you can have.

“I just hope our work together will drive the dreams of Iran in the future,” added Queiroz, who had been out of work since April after an ill-fated World Cup qualification campaign with Egypt.

Queiroz replaces Croatian Dragan Skocic, who led Iran to 15 wins in 18 matches and a comfortable qualification for the World Cup.

The former Real Madrid manager met with his players during a training session on Wednesday.

A group of 24 Iranian top-flight players will be joined by the overseas players in a camp in Austria, starting Saturday.

Iran will play Uruguay (Sept. 23) and Senegal (Sept. 27) in the upcoming international break.

Queiroz parted ways with Iran three years ago – after a semifinal defeat against Japan at the AFC Asian Cup – to take over as the Colombia manager, only to be sacked in December 2020 – midway through a disappointing run at the World Cup qualifiers.

The showdown in Qatar will be a third successive World Cup for Iran under the former No. 2 to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, who had also steered his home country at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Iran came within touching distance of a last-16 spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, finishing third in the group with four points, while European heavyweights Spain and Portugal progressed bagged five to progress.

Iran will kick off its World Cup campaign against England on November 21 in Group B – also featuring Wales and USA.
