Iran will not be able to play Russia in a friendly fixture due to the Asian team’s schedule before heading to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Mohammad-Mehdi Nabi, the vice president of the Iranian Football Federation said: “The Russians wanted to play us on November 16, but that’s the same date Iran flies to Qatar.”

Nabi added that the Asian powerhouse will be looking to play a Persian Gulf country on Nov. 11.

Iran, under new manager Carlos Queiroz, left for a training camp in Austria last week, which also sees Iran take on Uruguay and Senegal in a couple of friendlies during the FIFA international break.

The Portuguese tactician was reappointed to job less than a fortnight ago to replace Croatian Dragan Skocic – three years after leaving the job to join Colombia following an AFC Asian Cup last-four defeat against Japan.

In a third successive World Cup with Queiroz on the bench, Iran will kick off its campaign against England at Al Rayyan’s Khalifa International Stadium on November 21.

Chasing a first-ever progress to the knockout phase, Queiroz’s side will then square off against Wales on Nov. 25 before taking on USA in the final round of Group B fixtures in Doha’s Al Thumama Stadium four days later.
