Iran’s effective and powerful presence in regional mechanisms, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), will lead to the achievement of economic objectives, neutralization of sanctions and promotion of multilateralism, said the government’s spokesman.

Ali Bahadori Jahromi added Iran’s membership in the SCO conveys the message to the enemies that the era of unilateralism, bids to isolate the country and cruel sanctions has ended, Fars News Agency reported.

He added the country’s exports of energy, goods, techno-engineering services, agricultural crops and technology to the SCO member states have surpassed $9 billion since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21.

Bahadori Jahromi said the SCO provides a favorable context for increasing interactions and exchanges among its member countries and helps them enhance cooperation with each other in security, political, economic and cultural areas.

He described as very remarkable and important the huge capacities of the SCO’s members in terms of their number, population, geographical area, gross domestic product, economic power, rich energy resources, presence in the United Nations Security Council and defense capabilities.

In September 2021, the 21st summit of the SCO leaders in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, declared the decision to start admitting Iran as a full member of the organization from an observer. On September 16, a memorandum of obligations on Iran’s SCO membership was signed at the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO held in the Uzbek city of Samarkand.
