Iran, Türkiye ready to exchange 600MW of electricity: Minister

Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian announced that Türkiye and Iran have succeeded in paving the ground for the exchange of electricity with the total capacity of 600 megawatts.

Mehrabian made the remarks on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the first specialized exhibition of innovative and technological products of the electric power industry in the capital Tehran on Monday, IRNA reported.

The two sides agreed upon upgrading the infrastructure of power transmission, he noted, adding that a back-to-back system has been set up in recent days; so, the power exchange takes place using the method.

In July, Mehrabian said the two countries agreed to utilize the modern back-to-back HVDC system to connect the Iranian power grid to Türkiye in Khoy-Bash Gala infrastructure.

The administration of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi has prioritized power diplomacy, the minister said, noting that the recent visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Tehran paved the ground for expansion of coordination in this regard and that development of power diplomacy was one of the main topics of negotiations among presidents of Russia, Türkiye, and Iran during the Astana peace summit on July 19, 2022.
