Ministry: Iranian tanker leaves Greek waters for predetermined destination

MFA.IR – The tanker carrying Iranian oil seized earlier in April by the Greek government left Greece’s waters for its predetermined destination on Wednesday.

Making the announcement in a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry added the tanker’s release comes after six months, and in view of the agreements reached between Tehran and Athens.

It said the Iranian-flagged vessel, which was sailing toward its destination in international waters, was forced to be anchored at a Greek port due to unfavorable climatic conditions and was, in a move in contradiction with international regulations and conventions, seized by the European state’s government, that also confiscated its oil to send it to the United States on board another ship.

The statement added Greece’s action, which was taken based on a local court’s verdict and under the pretext of judicial cooperation with the United States, was faced with Iran’s stiff opposition from the very beginning.

Given that the move was in violation of international maritime law, the Islamic Republic placed on its agenda taking a series of extensive political and legal measures to counter it, which eventually led to overturning of the initial verdict in the country’s appeal and high courts, it said.

The Foreign Ministry added that Iran has also simultaneously released the two Greek-flagged tankers it had seized in the Persian Gulf in May.
