Persian Gulf Pro League: Favorites looking to get back to winning ways
Sports Desk

Giant trio Persepolis, Esteghlal, and Sepahan will be hoping to regain their winning touch when they are back in Persian Gulf Pro League action on Wednesday.

Yahya Golmohammadi’s Persepolis, which is after a record-extending sixth consecutive title, will be looking to capitalize on the home support when taking on San’at Naft Abadan at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

A limited number of Tehran-based Reds’ fans will be back on the stands – after an 18-month prohibition due to the COVID-19 pandemic – as Persepolis is seeking to end a slow start to the season.

A run of three winless games has left Persepolis languishing in the seventh place of the table – three points off the top.

A first defeat of the season – a 1-0 setback at Aluminium Arak – was followed by successive 1-1 draws against Golgohar Sirjan and Mes Rafsanjan, as Golmohammadi’s men are yet to cope with the departure of Iranian international center-back Mohammad-Hossein Kan’anizadegan and Ahamd Nourollahi – Reds’ best player last season – as well as a switch to a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 formation.

Meanwhile, Esteghlal – second in the table on goal difference – will play away to Golgohar Sirjan.

Farhad Majidi’s men were held to a goalless draw at home against Nassaji Mazandaran on Friday, which saw Esteghlal being overtaken by Aluminium Arak on top.

Golgohar will be searching for a first win in four matches which will see Amir Qalenoei’s side move above Esteghlal.

In Isfahan, third-placed Sepahan will visit newly-promoted Fajr Sepasi – which will hope to build on a 1-0 victory at Paykan last time out.

An emphatic start to the season, which had seen Moharram Navidkia’s Sepahan make a clean sweep of victories and clean sheets in the first three games, stalled with a 1-0 defeat against archrival Zob Ahan, followed by a goalless draw at home against Tractor on Friday.

Elsewhere, Aluminium will be looking to extend its stay on top when visiting Havadar, while Nassaji Mazandaran will be after a first victory since the opening day of the season at home against Paykan – fourth in the table, equal on points with Sepahan.

Tractor and Padideh will square off in Tabriz, with Zob Ahan taking on Foolad Khuzestan at home.

Naft Masjed Soleyman, meanwhile, will host Mes Rafsanjan.
