Iran detects first monkeypox case: Health Ministry
National Desk

The first monkeypox case was detected in Iran, said the Health Ministry spokesman.

Pedram Pakain added the patient is a 32-year-old woman whose symptoms include skin lesions, IRNA reported.

He noted that the infected case, who is from the southwestern city of Ahvaz, was immediately quarantined.

Pakain gave the assurance that the disease fails to have a high mortality rate and can be treated, saying those who have been vaccinated against smallpox are immune to monkeypox to a great extent.

Since January 1, 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported to the World Health Organization from 42 member states across five regions of the Americas, Africa, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, and Western Pacific, according to who.int.

As of June 15, a total of 2,103 laboratory confirmed cases and one probable case, including one death, have been reported to WHO.
