UN troops recapture Central African city from rebels
UN peacekeeping troops said they have retaken control of a city in the Central African Republic captured two weeks ago by armed groups waging an offensive against the government of President Faustin Archange Touadera.

Rebels abandoned their positions in Bangassou, 750 kilometers east of the capital Bangui, and fled the city following an ultimatum on Friday from the UN peacekeeping force MINUSCA, the mission's spokesman Vladimir Monteiro said late on Saturday, AFP wrote.
Tens of thousands protest French law restricting filming of police
Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across France against a proposed security bill that would restrict sharing images of police, in a country outraged by police brutality.
Protesters in Paris and several other cities marched on Saturday to denounce the controversial legislation that the government proposed last year to criminalize the publication of images of on-duty police officers, Press TV reported.
Gunmen kill two female Supreme Court judges in Afghanistan: Police
Unidentified gunmen killed two female judges from Afghanistan’s Supreme Court on Sunday morning, police said, adding to a wave of assassinations in Kabul and other cities.
The two judges, who have not yet been named, were killed and their driver wounded, in an attack at around 8:30 a.m., police said, adding the case was being investigated by security forces, Reuters reported.
UAE, Israel to partake for first time in joint military drills in Greece
The UAE and Israel plan to take part in a joint military drill in Greece, the first public revelation of military cooperation between the two after their normalization of ties last August.
Israel’s military sources broke the news on Saturday, with Maariv daily saying the war game was part of an international military exercise, Press TV wrote.
Death toll in Sudan Darfur clashes rises to 48
Ongoing clashes in Sudan's restive Darfur have killed at least 48 people in two days, state media said on Sunday, just over two weeks after a long-running peacekeeping mission ended operations.
The violence has reportedly pitted the Massalit tribe against Arab nomads in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, and quickly morphed into broader fighting involving armed militias in the area, AFP reported.
Indonesia quake kills at least 78
At least 78 people have been killed after an earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Sulawesi Province on Friday, the Search and Rescue agency (Basarnas) said on Sunday, the latest in a string of disasters to hit the Southeast Asian country.
In a statement, Basarnas confirmed 78 had died, 67 of whom were from the district of Mamuju and the rest from the district of Majene in West Sulawesi, Reuters wrote.
Bobi Wine to legally contest Uganda vote, urges nonviolence
Ugandan opposition candidate Bobi Wine said he will legally contest the results of the presidential election that saw incumbent President Yoweri Museveni announced the winner, asking his supporters to refrain from violence.
Wine made the announcement on Sunday via the Twitter account belonging to his National Unity Platform (NUP) party, hours after the country’s election commission said Museveni won the vote with 58.6 percent of the vote, according to aljazeera.com.
Harris set to resign Senate seat today
US Senator Kamala Harris of California resigns from the Senate today in preparation for her inauguration as Joe Biden’s vice president on Wednesday, according to aides familiar with her plans.
Governor Gavin Newsom has picked California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the rest of Harris’ term, which could include President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, Reuters wrote.
