Iran’s Seyyed Rasoul Mo’tamedi and Reza Dehdar dominated the men’s 102kg contests of the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on Saturday, clinching four medals, including three golds.

A successful 175kg lift saw Dehdar top the snatch competition, with his compatriot Mo’tamedi taking the bronze on 173kg, following Qatar’s Fares Ibrahim el-Bakh, who finished on 174kg.

In the clean & jerk category, Mo’tamedi lifted 227kg on his third attempt for the gold medal. The Qatari weightlifter again had to settle for a silver with 222kg, while Kazakhstan’s Artyom Antropov stood third, also on 222kg.

Mo’tamedi went on to claim the total gold with an overall tally of 396kg, followed by Ibrahim (396kg) and Antropov (390kg).

Dehdar finished fourth in the total standing with 389kg.

Missed opportunity

On Friday, Iranian Sohrab Moradi missed out on securing a Tokyo Olympics berth despite bagging three medals in the men’s 96kg contests.

The Rio 2016 gold medalist took the snatch bronze with 174kg, trailing gold winner Tian Tao of China, who lifted 175kg, and South Korean Jang Yeon-hak (174kg).

A 210kg lift gave the Iranian the silver medal of the clean & jerk competition, before he claimed the total silver with 384kg.

The Chinese athlete made a clean sweep of the golds with 211kg in clean & jerk and 386kg in total.

The Iranian, who had to tally at least 400kg in total to book a ticket for Tokyo, will now head to the qualification event in Colombia next month to pursue a quota place for July’s Games.
