The national libraries of Iran and Indonesia put pen to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) over the development of library and information science during a virtual meeting on Monday.

Ashraf Borujerdi, the head of National Library and Archives of Iran, hailed the agreement as a new chapter in cultural ties between the two countries, IRNA reported.

“Indonesia, as the biggest Islamic country, and home to various cultures, has had a long-standing warm relationship with Iran and the cultural exchanges contributes to boosting ties between the two nations,” Borujerdi said.

Borujerdi underlined the restoration of historical manuscripts among the features of the accord.

She added that her organization would be seeking collaboration with Indonesian experts on Islamic and Iranian studies.

Meanwhile, the National Library of Indonesia chief, Muhammad Syarif Bando, said multiple fields of cooperation would be approached through the agreement.

The Indonesian referred to “some 400 Persian words in the Indonesian language” as an indicator of historic commonalities between Iran and Indonesia.

Bando invited his Iranian counterpart to pay a visit to the Indonesian library for further negotiations on future plans.
