Bahman Namvar Motlaq, the head of Iranian Academy of Arts, described the country’s handicrafts as a driving force in economy, stressing the need for a technology-based approach to the field of art.

He made the remarks in a ceremony to celebrate the World Handicrafts Day and honor the veteran artists, hailing them as the key figures behind the Iranian identity, while “they remain among the underprivileged classes of the society,” IRNA reported.

Namvar Motlaq demand the education system to adopt a new approach in establishing a new mentor-student model in teaching the handicraft skills.

Ten Iranian artists were honored for the efforts throughout their careers in handicrafts.

Persian miniaturist Rasoul Majdi and Behrouz Siefollahi, as well as Kobra Heidari, an artist in traditional weaving, and wood carving artist Shirin Mehdi Qolikhan were among the artists honored during the ceremony.
