EU: JCPOA parties focus on removal of US sanctions

The European Union said on Wednesday that the parties to the 2015 nuclear deal are trying to restore the pact so that Iran can benefit from the landmark accord.

“In addition to focusing on reviving the JCPOA, the international community also seeks to ensure that Iran benefits from the JCPOA after the lifting of sanctions,” Peter Stano, spokesperson for the EU’s foreign policy service, said using the official name of the nuclear agreement, IRNA reported.

Iran and the remaining JCPOA parties – Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia – are expected to resume talks for the revival of the deal by bringing the US back to compliance three years after its unilateral withdrawal that was followed by reimposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

They have held six rounds of negotiations in Vienna since April, after the US voiced its willingness to return to the JCPOA.

Stano said that the US would remove its sanctions on Iran after rejoining the deal as they are “the main problem of Iran’s economy”.

He said EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, as the coordinator of the JCPOA, is trying to restart the Vienna talks in a bid to revitalize the accord.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri Kani and EU deputy foreign policy chief, Enrique Mora, held “positive” talks in Tehran last week to discuss the future of the Vienna talks.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Baqeri Kani and Mora would continue their negotiations in Brussels in the coming days.

But Stano said that such a meeting has not yet been confirmed.

“In our opinion, it is urgent to return to Vienna to resume talks between JCPOA members,” he added.
