Navidkia reaffirms resignation as Sepahan manager

Moharram Navidkia reconfirmed his resignation as the manager of the Persian Gulf Pro League club Sepahan.

Navidkia, considered among the greatest to have played at the Isfahan-based club, had first announced his departure in a post-match press conference after the goalless Isfahan derby against Zob Ahan on Wednesday.

The decision was rejected in a statement by Sepahan a day later, though the club added certain changes need to be made to Navidkia’s technical staff for the rest of the season.

However, in a letter published late on Friday, Navidkia insisted that he would have no part to play in Sepahan’s campaign as he believes “a new manager might contribute more to the team’s success.”

In his managerial debut, Navidkia led Sepahan to a runner-up finish in the league last season – two points behind Persepolis.

Summer additions of ex-Persepolis striker Shahriar Moghanloo, Foolad Khuzestan midfielder Farshad Ahmadzadeh, as well as Masoud Rigi of Esteghlal suggested that Sepahan could be the leading contender to bring an end to the five-year dominance of Persepolis over the Iranian club football.

The season began brightly for Navidkia’s men, who won their first three games in emphatic fashion, but the draw against Zob Ahan meant that Sepahan has now won only one in last five outings, trailing Esteghlal on top by 13 points.

With 11 games to spare, Sepahan’s quest for a first league title since 2015 seems to have finished in despair, and having been knocked out of the Hazfi Cup, the club will have to wait at least another year to get the taste of the domestic silverware.

Sepahan will begin its AFC Champions League campaign on April 7 against Uzbek champion Pakhtakor in Group D, which also features Qatari giant Al Duhail and the winner of the playoff tie between Al Taawoun of Saudi Arabia and Syrian side Al Jaish.
