Diplomatic missions’ security main issue: Khatibzadeh ‎

The most important aspect of any diplomatic mission is its security, said the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Saeed Khatibzadeh made the remarks in an address to a Tuesday conference, adding the Iranian Foreign Ministry representative offices in different states have, over the past few years, been the target of invasions, having seen some of their staff martyred, as part of bids to compromise the psychological safety of the country’s diplomats, IRNA reported.

Pointing to the imminent anniversary of the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London that took place from April 30 to May 5, 1980, he noted that these days are very important in the history of the country’s diplomatic relations.

At that time, a self-proclaimed group occupied the Iranian Embassy in London, during which the personnel were all martyred, Khatibzadeh noted, saying the tragic incident marked the beginning of efforts to ensure the security of Iranian diplomatic missions and sites, as diplomatic exchanges are among the most important human activities.

He stressed that the Foreign Ministry has, in recent years, assembled a list of aggressions against the country’s diplomatic missions and sites, pursued the cases through international organizations, and is doing the required follow-ups.

Speaking at the same conference, Kazem Gharibabadi, the Iranian Judiciary chief’s deputy for international affairs and secretary of the country’s High Council for Human Rights, emphasized that the immunity of diplomatic sites is an absolute one, which cannot be revoked even by the host country.

He added that even when there is a blaze at foreign embassy or consulate, firefighters cannot enter it without permission.

The official added that Iran was among the few countries whose diplomatic sites had been invaded the least, while the European sites have been attacked the most.
