China said on Thursday although the United States has acknowledged the failure of its maximum pressure” policy against Iran, it is still tightening the sanctions, which will only undermine the Vienna talks on the revival of a 2015 nuclear deal and further tarnish Washingtons reputation.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a regular press conference in reaction to a Wednesday comment by Robert Malley, U.S. special envoy for Iran, about the possibility of the intensification of the sanctions on Tehran in case of the Vienna negotiationsfailure and his acknowledgement that the U.S. maximum pressure policy on the Islamic Republic has failed, according to

In testimony to Congress on Wednesday, Malley said the prospect of reviving the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is tenuous, adding if the parties fail to reach a deal, the United States will further tighten sanctions and respond strongly to any escalation by Iran. He also confessed that U.S. maximum pressure” policy on Iran has failed.

Wang said having acknowledged its own mistakes, the United States is still tightening the sanctions on Iran, instead of reflecting on its approach.

Such moves wont help break the deadlock on the talks, but will only undermine the negotiation process and further tarnish the U.S. reputation.”

He added the Vienna talks have entered their final stage, noting that at this juncture, parties should make greater efforts to resolve the outstanding issues at an early date and avoid letting previous efforts come to naught.

As the one who created the nuclear crisis, the United States should make political decisions as soon as possible, actively respond to the Iranian sides legitimate concerns and facilitate a smooth conclusion of the negotiations, Wang stressed.

He gave the assurance that China always firmly supports the political settlement process of the Iranian nuclear issue.

We will continue to participate in the negotiations constructively, help bring the JCPOA back to the normal track at an early date, uphold the international non-proliferation system and promote peace and stability in the Middle East.”
