Iran on Sunday successfully carried out the second launch of its homegrown satellite carrier for “predetermined research purposes”.

Ahmad Hosseini, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry, said the Zoljanah satellite carrier would gather information in low-earth orbit and would be critical to promote Iran’s space industry.

"The third development phase of the Zoljanah satellite carrier will be based on a combination of information gained during today's launch," Hosseini added.

He said the three-stage satellite launcher can technically compete with the world's top satellite carriers.

The Zoljanah uses a combination of solid and liquid fuels. The satellite carrier is 25.5 meters long and weighs about 52 tons. It utilizes a 1.5-meter diameter solid fuel engine with 74 tons of thrust.

It first launch was made in early 2021.

Earlier this month, Hosseini said the performance of different stages of Zoljanah is examined and evaluated during each research launch.

Following the incorporation of required technology and successful operation, the Zoljanah satellite carrier will be capable of putting “payloads weighing up to 220 kilograms into the orbit at an altitude of 500 kilometers,” he added, according to Press TV.
