Daily COVID infections surpass 1,000, fatalities reach eight: Ministry
The number of Iran’s daily COVID-19 cases reached 1,007 on Monday as eight people died of the disease, according to a report by the Health Ministry.

Over the past weeks, daily infections in the country had remained below 200 and dropping, on some days, to less than 100.

According to the ministry, the total death toll stands at 141,404, and of the newly-detected cases, 122 have been hospitalized.

It said the total identified COVID cases in the country since the outbreak in late February 2020 have reached 7,240,564, of which 7,063,479 patients have recovered.

At present, the report said, 232 COVID patients are in critical condition and so far, 52,652,431 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in the country.

By Monday, 64,655,797 people in Iran had received their first dose of the COVID vaccine, of which 58,010,654 had been given a second dose. The number of those who have received a third dose of the vaccine stands at 27,771,991. The ministry put the total number of administered COVID jabs in the country at 150,438,442.

Currently, no city in the country is coded red (very high-risk) or orange (high-risk) in terms of the coronavirus spread. However, the number of the yellow (medium-risk) and blue (low-risk) cities stands at 105 and 343, respectively.

Vaccination against COVID-19 gained greater momentum in Iran under the administration of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi on the back of the rise in the domestic production and imports of jabs.

Over the past few weeks, the country reported zero daily deaths on some days.

Iranian experts warn that two new fast-spreading sub-variants of Omicron, namely, BA.4 and BA.5, will become the prevailing strains in the country in the coming weeks.
