An Iranian military advisor from the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps was killed by an improvised bomb near Syria's capital Damascus, the IRGC said in a statement on Wednesday, blaming the attack on Israel.

“Colonel Davoud Ja’fari, one of the advisors of the IRGC’s Aerospace Division in Syria, was martyred in a roadside bomb explosion planted by the associates of the Zionist regime (of Israel) near Damascus yesterday morning,” the statement said.

The IRGC vowed that “the criminal Zionist regime will undoubtedly receive the response for this crime".

According to Tasnim News Agency, Ja’fari was “probably” among IRGC troops who captured 10 U.S. Marines on January 12, 2016, after they entered Iranian territorial waters near the Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf.

Iran maintains an advisory mission in Syria at the request of its government to help it take out foreign-backed militants and terrorists, who have been fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad since 2011.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against Syria in recent years, targeting Syrian troops and foreign forces assisting the government in Damascus.

Last August, a top member of the IRGC Ground Force, identified as General Abolfazl Alijani, was killed in Syria.

Also in March, the IRGC said two Iranian advisors named as Colonel Ehsan Karbalaeipour and Colonel Morteza Saeednejad had been killed in an Israeli missile attack on the countryside of Damascus.
